I am running PHP 7.4.22 I cannot say for certain what was being done, but it caused healthcheck on the awsbload balancer to fail as the healthcheck endpoint was returning a fatal error (wordpress is running in docker container with persistent storage for /wp-content/ was running stable on old 3.x version but have had to disable plugin for now.
